What is facade signage?
Facade signage is the most visible signage element a business operates: the storefront name and logo seen from the street, the illuminated sign that draws traffic after dark, the architectural lettering on a corporate office. It is also the most regulated. In Rotterdam, most facade signage above modest size thresholds requires an Omgevingsvergunning (environmental permit) from the municipality, with technical drawings, structural calculations and welstandscommissie aesthetic review for high-profile locations.

Five common formats

- Dimensional letters (CNC-milled or built-up) — 3D letters in aluminium, acrylic or composite. Non-illuminated or paired with halo lighting.
- Illuminated light boxes — enclosed boxes with translucent face and internal LED. Reliable, low maintenance, suitable for hospitality and retail.
- Channel letters — individually constructed 3D letters with internal LED. Front-lit, halo-lit or combination. The premium option for retail, hotels and corporate offices.
Facade signage pricing
All prices include 21% Dutch VAT, design, production and installation. Permit fees and welstandscommissie review charges are pass-through municipal costs and quoted separately.

Permit process in Rotterdam
The Rotterdam Omgevingsvergunning process for facade signage involves three checks: structural (is the attachment safe?), aesthetic (does the signage fit the streetscape and the building?), and environmental (does the illumination level meet local standards?). For heritage buildings or signage on a prominent location, the welstandscommissie reviews the aesthetic submission in detail.
Our role: we prepare the full technical dossier (dimensioned drawings, material specification, illumination calculation, mounting detail), submit it to the municipality on your behalf via the Omgevingsloket portal, respond to any queries during the review, and schedule installation immediately after permit grant. Typical lead time is four to eight weeks for the permit, two to three weeks for production in parallel. For non-permitted signage (small printed boards inside the threshold, internal signage, fully reversible heritage-friendly installations) we skip the permit step and deliver within two weeks.
