Rotterdam Prins Alexander is the city’s largest residential district, developed from the 1960s onwards as a planned expansion east of the centre. Its commercial infrastructure is concentrated in three nodes: Alexandrium (one of the largest retail parks in the Netherlands, with over 120 units), Brainpark (a business campus of medium and large-format offices along the A20 motorway), and Oosterhof (a covered neighbourhood shopping centre serving the Ommoord residential area). All three locations have modern architecture, high-visibility signage positions and relatively permissive planning.

Prins Alexander is classified welstand zone-3 (modern commercial) across its main commercial corridors — the most permissive tier in the Rotterdam welstand framework. LED illuminated signs, large lightboxes and backlit channel letters are standard in Alexandrium and Brainpark. Individual centres have their own tenant design guides specifying maximum luminance, sign-zone dimensions and font conventions. Alfa Reclame has worked in Alexandrium, Oosterhof and Brainpark since 2014 and holds current copies of all three design guides.

What we do in this neighbourhood

  • Alexandrium retail park — Full-format LED lightboxes (single and double-sided) for unit fascias, projecting pylons and parking-level wayfinding. Alexandrium’s design guide requires artwork to be submitted for centre management approval before fabrication; we prepare and submit documentation on your behalf.
  • Brainpark office campus — Premium halo-illuminated 3D letters in brushed aluminium or powder-coated steel for building entrances, reception lobbies and car-park facades. Brainpark tenants typically want a sign visible from the A20; we calculate optimal letter height and luminance for each position.
  • Oosterhof shopping centre — Compact LED lightboxes and channel-letter fascias for neighbourhood retail units. Oosterhof signs are inside the covered mall; we use daylight-colour LED (4000 K) that maintains visual impact under the centre’s artificial lighting conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Are illuminated signs permitted in Prins Alexander?
Prins Alexander is predominantly welstand zone-3 (modern commercial), the most permissive tier in Rotterdam. LED lightboxes, backlit channel letters and large illuminated fascias are generally acceptable. Individual retail parks such as Alexandrium and shopping centres such as Oosterhof have their own tenant guides specifying formats and luminance levels. We review these before designing.
What is the difference between a lightbox and halo-illuminated letters?
A lightbox is a slim aluminium frame with a printed translucent face, backlit by LED strips — the entire face glows. Halo-illuminated letters are individual 3D letters mounted proud of the fascia; LEDs behind each letter create a glow on the wall. Halo letters look more premium and are preferred in Brainpark office contexts. Lightboxes are more cost-effective for frequent graphic changes in retail.
How much electricity does an LED illuminated sign use?
A typical LED lightbox (120 × 60 cm) consumes 20–30 W, roughly €25–40 per year running 12 hours per day. Halo channel letters of similar footprint use 15–25 W. We provide a consumption estimate for every sign as part of the design process.
